Things I do when my husband is away...

J is away for a few days and it got me to thinking how I change my behaviour when he's not around and so I thought it might be fun to share and see what others do/don't do when other halves go missing...

I watch trashy TV and don't feel guilty
I stay up later than I should to try and make myself tired enough to sleep
I eat on the sofa instead of at the table
I cook mushrooms (J hates mushrooms, which is very upsetting, although oddly enough he'll eat Morels...)
I stay late at work as there's nothing to go home for
I think of people to call to talk to because I miss coming home and telling him all about my day
I try and catch up on blogging!
I leave the washing up overnight
I miss him...

So now pray tell, what do you do when your other half isn't around?

Everything on that list bar cooking mushrooms, makes it onto mine. That, and I may occasionally consume entire cartons of ice-cream...

I have much experience of this and recognise particularly watching trashy TV, staying up late and hanging around at work.

I also tend to eat really, really late (like 10pm/11pm) because I kinda forget to cook when I get home and then it takes forever.

I also do constructive things: visit places I'd never think of taking Helen (like random restaurants, galleries) or go and watch films that Helen would hate. Tonight I am thinking about going to see Eyes Wide Open, about a gay relationship in an Orthodox Jewish butcher's shop. Seriously...

My husband is always away Monday to Thursday so my habits are becoming ingrained!

I tend to stay later at work and my cooking habits are wildly different to that of M's, who cooks when he is here. I will happily eat leftovers, or toast, or pasta. Now it is summer, I cannot be bothered to use the AGA so I live off cold food, toast and salad or microwaved leftovers. Occasionally I bake but usually I am too busy.

I also read in bed, watch Desperate Housewives/Gossip Girl/90210 while I eat, laptop balanced on the table (delete as appropriate depending what is on). I also read in the bath in the winter.

There isn't much to do in Somerset in the evenings by way of galleries or cinemas so I sometimes go for a walk or a run. I also do food shopping and spend ages looking at every aisle. One night a week, I am also a scout leader.

This week however I am mostly watching Wimbledon.

numbers 1,2 6,7 are all me, unfortunately we are slobs and often eat on the sofa. I can't stay later at work (it being a shop) and I have to plan things to do in advance so that I don't sit and mope.

This is a post I can relate to as my husband works night shifts a couple of nights every fortnight. I do more or less exactly the same things you do (thank goodness for Sky+ as I can record lots of trashy programmes for that night!) but have to add that I like to eat chocalate peanuts or sometimes a satay dish, as my husband is allergic to peanuts so I miss having them.

@agirl - No mushrooms! And on the ice cream I have to make sure I don't have it in the house so I can't eat the whole pot :)

@Ross - It's hard to motivate yourself to cook for one sometimes right. I'm so used to cooking for two I always over cook or get confused.I should go and do cultural things but J isn't away too often so not many opportunities to plan!

@Peacock feathers - I'm glad that you're getting into the swing of things, it's funny how you fill time when someone is missing.

@Rebecca - I should plan but then I also enjoy the unplanned time when I can do as I wish and be messy.

@CameronPoe2409 - It must be a common thing to eat things other halves don't like when they're away! I can completely understand.

The whole first year and a bit we lived together, Graham was away mon to fri every week in the air force; so I had a total routine all to myself {although I would always rush around on a thurs night cleaning!} and watched pretty much every I wanted.

When Graham left the air force and was at home; it was so odd as I had got used to cooking for myself & going out a lot with friends without having to tell anyone what I was doing!

I have got used to it more now but I hate not being able to watch all the trash I used too!

I definitely stay up wayyyy late and I hog the whole bed and let my dog sleep with his pillow :) hehe

@Gaynor - I can imagine it was hard to adjust. Although I think I would struggle at first with that much time apart I think it depends on what was happening that week. Sometimes it's nice to have a little time to oneself!

@Krystal - haha! That made me giggle to myself like a naughty schoolgirl. I would love to have a dog to cuddle when J isn't around...

I have to admit I do all that you listed while he is away. One terrible thing is that I will MOPE around the house and it's sad.

My other half is leaving for a week, I've made plans to watch all my trash shows like Gossip Girl and the Hills. Catch up on blogs, and read some great books.

Eat cereal for dinner as I can't be bothered cooking... that's the main thing I'm guilty of when he's away!

I don't have an other half so every night is a do what you like! I believe Carrie calls it secret single behaviour.

I guess I go out a lot more than I might if I was with someone so nights in are rare and cherished. I mostly catch up on bad tv on i player (well not bad, Dr Who etc- but no more- sniff!) stay up too late and write (not the blog)
